the American Wirehair

The American Wirehair is a breed resulting from a spontaneous mutation in a litter of farm cats in 1966. A red tabby and white male was the only kitten to survive. Joan O'Shea, a Havana Brown and German Rex breeder, saw the unique kitten and attempted several times, without success, to breed his parents again to reproduce the kinky coat. AT the suggestion of a cat geneticist, Roy Robinson, Joan bred the red tabby and white, now named Council Rock Adam of Hi-Fi, to several female cats and produced more Wirehairs. Adam is behind all AWHs in existence.

The American Wirehair is outcrossed to American Shorthairs and has the ASH's solid and muscular conformation and good health. The AWH has a pleasing coat texture that begs to be touched. The cat also has high cheek bones, giving it's eyes a slightly slanted appearance, with the outer corners of the eye being tilted upwards.

The American Wirehair is a definite people cat. They get along well with other pets and love "their" people. AWH are not a vocal breed, having a very quiet call. You may find them following you from room to room much like a d*g. You are never alone, and know it, when you own an American Wirehair!
